THE recent feature on local Filipino-American rock bands on TFC's news program 'Balitang America,' garnered mixed reviews from scene players. Some took it as a bad spin by the reporter, who made it look like local artists were begging for attention and love. Some think it was good publicity for a struggling local scene ,while others think both: Good publicity that came from a bad premise.
Whatever it is, the report is an accurate depiction of what is really happening. Don't get it wrong, we think the scene is alive and well. It is doing fine on its own. However, as the report accurately relayed, mainstream Filipino businesses do not support local FilAm artists like they do imported artists from the Philippines. It is not an observation, nor a conjecture. It is a fact. Since 2006, we have organized major Fil-Am gigs in NYC every summer and guess how many local Filipino businesses supported the shows: You guessed right. Zero.

THE trend is clear. The time has come. The word is ‘free.’
Today, Nine Inch Nails offered their latest album free of charge. It is the boldest statement yet from a major artist about the state of the music industry since Radiohead gave their fans options on how to go about the band’s latest release: They can choose to pay, or not.

BEFORE the year ended, several media companies ran Filipino-American year ender stories to give importance to people and events that made the year an interesting one. From the usual political stories like the Sentosa 27 case, GabNet and some entertainment stories such as Lea Salonga’s return to Les Miz and the phenomenon that is Happy Slip, it is shocking to see how much coverage Filipino American bands and local artists get from this big media companies.
How many Fil Am music stories were in most year ender features? The Answer: Nil. Zero. Nada. Wala.
Indeed, it had been a struggle to get coverage from TV, radio and newspapers in 2007. Could it be that they were not aware of the great things that were happening in the scene last year? No, we made it sure that they were since we sent them invites. They just did not show up.

YEAR after year, we see show producers coughing up loads of cash to bring Filipino artists here in the States. So far, this year, we have seen Piolo Pascual, MYMP, Aegis, Geneva Cruz, Pops Fernandez, Kuh Ledesma, Parokya ni Edgar, Bamboo, Sarah Geronimo, and Ara Mina. These are big artists and producers expect big profits from them.
However, based on some reports and accounting, it seems that only few producers actually make money from these kinds of shows. On any given concert night, most of these producers have their fingers crossed to the point of deformation, hoping to at least break even on their investments.
