LAST Saturday night's FAHSI-Sumisibol fundraising show at the club Rewind was a major letdown. Yes, to some of the best bands from Poptimes Magazine, it was worse than the iPhone/AT&T mess. At least with the AT&T foul-up, iPhone buyers still got their cool phones. But with last Saturday's rock show, everyone didn't even get to rock.

For some asinine reason, the guys at the club Rewind wouldn't let the bands play at the normal rock n' roll volume. They threatened to shut the show down if the bands play above their desired decibels. It was as If they were pulling a Spinal Tap joke on reverse- turn the amp down to -1 instead of up to 11.

It was disappointing and frustrating for the four bands that came up, hauled their instruments and 'tried' to rock out for the very few that came. Right  from the start, when triCKBag played, red flags were everywhere from club Rewind. It was too loud they said.

Duh, isn't this a rock n' roll show? Weren't they informed that rock n' roll is supposed to sound loud and full?

It wasn't like the bands brought 700-watt amps that could shake Wembley Stadium. In fact, the bands brought rehearsal amps for the event. Amps that couldn't even shake Rewind's bathroom. But still, it was ruled out as 'too loud' for the Lower East Side's Noise Code!

Imagine that! Too loud for the Noise Code of NYC's Lower East Side! Isn't it that the Lower East Side is known to be the birthplace of punk?

Anyway, it appeared that the guys at Rewind were not into rock music.
As a matter of fact, right after they cut Bleud's set and The Happy Analogues'(yes, they did take one hour from the show due to their disapproval with the bands' sounds), the DJ there started to play House and R&B mixes using their own 700-watt power amps. It was so loud, you couldn't even hear the toilet flush.

The Rewind gig is perhaps the worst gig this year, and now Rewind can really make sure that there will be no Fil-Am rock shows there until they shut down.

avatar I agree. As an organizer, it's important to understand the needs of the bands
as well as the venue. I've heard of the noise code in NYC as being pretty
strict for clubs and bars nowadays, but the gig at Rewind was totally
ridiculous. Having double standards for djs vs live bands is not cool at all.
On a lighter note, great job on an impromptu Poptimes party! (I wouldn't even
call it a FASHI/Sumisibol fundraiser. No one collected admission from me nor
anyone else I spoke to who was there.)

avatar Unfortunately, I was late for the event, and I missed Trickbag's set and caught
the caught few songs of Then Again's set before enjoying the rest of the bands.
I've gotta say, I had no idea about all this backstage unrest about the levels!
That sucks if the venue really allowed the DJ to play louder than the bands.
What's up with that??

As for the fundraiser, they should really have had
someone more animated or something at the door. It seemed like no one wanted to
collect. There was a guy seated in front of a tin box at the front table when I
walked in. I stood in front of him with my wallet opened in my hand for a good
30 seconds. I was looking right at him and he gave me no eye contact! So I
still don't know to this day if he was responsible for collecting the donations.
He didn't greet me or Anthony or ask if I was going to donate, so I just closed
my wallet and walked over to where the party was. Oh well!

Still,...

avatar I thought the gig was pretty fun! Trickbag and Then Again were good as always.
It was good to hear the old Bleud songs, and the new THA songs as well! It was
pretty lame that their sets were cut short. FUCK Rewind!

avatar I was looking forward to the Rewind gig as a chance to vent out recent stress
and frustrations through some some good ol' LOUD rock music. So much for that.
But at least I had the chance to see some poptimers again. The bands all
sounded great. Love the new THA songs.

avatar sorry to hear that guys. bad trep yun.

avatar Much of my frustration in regards to this night comes from the fact that people
who should not be taking heat for the failure of the event ended up apologizing.
As I've said before it should have been the owners of Rewind that owed EVERYONE
apologies - to the performers, to the organizers, to the attendees and most
importantly, to the kids. Let's not forget folks that this was no ordinary gig,
as the flyer clearly stated, this was a benefit concert for "The Youth."

Yes, Rewind failed in many aspects to satisfy. They should not have agreed
to hold this gig at their place if, as they claim, they didn't know what they
were getting into. This is complete BS b/c several weeks prior to the show one
of the owners was discussing set up and full drum sets to be allowed in their
lounge area. Type of music was also specifically mentioned as "rock"
not house, R&B, or hip hop. The show was supposed to only last until...
Feliza  - whoa.   |2007-07-03 11:15:03
avatar Well said Monica! Wow, I had no idea all that tension was going on with the
owners of the joint. That is kinda crazy that they would agree to the show and
then put limits on the whole thing! Well, I still had a fun time just getting to
watch the bands play. I think even in the worst of circumstances, you all
managed to pull through, like true professionals. So kudos! I paid the $10, but
yeah. They weren't very clear about that at the door. Well, at least we know now
that Rewind is not the place to hold evenst with rock bands.

I spoke to one of
the Sumisibol reps there and, strangely enough, she said she had no idea that
the event was even taking place until the Tuesday prior to it! She only got 1
e-mail about it, and it was last minute. So apparently there was a communication
gap in the org itself. [smiley=sad]
