100,000 Filipinos came out on March 7, 2009 and enjoyed what is known as the last ever set of the greatest Filipino rock band ever, the Eraserheads.

It was a gigantic gig only the Pinoy Fab Four can pull off. Not even the mythical rock legends Juan Dela Cruz, or the unforgettable pop kings the APO Hiking Society can muster a gig as grand as that final set. Simply put, Filipino music fans have never seen anything like it–Unprecedented.

At the end of the show, Ely Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Buddy Zabala, and Raimund Marasigan gathered stage front to take their final bows before their adoring fans. They blew kisses to the multitude for showing up and remaining true to their music. It was at this time when Ely grabbed the microphone and said the last words: “ Thank you! We are the Eraserheads.”

Such uncanny words from the eHeads front man– particularly in his use of the present form “are.” Yes, they are the Eraserheads, never “was” and always will be. But the problem lies with the context of where and when Ely uttered the words. He said it at the final set, which could totally negate his statement and make it sarcastic instead of a statement of fact. Because technically, when he uttered those words, they are not the Eraserheads anymore. They have strummed the last chord, and sang the final song so they are Eraserheads no more at that moment. They “were” the Eraserheads at the point- ex-Eraserheads.
But it is still clever word play, which begs the question, are they still the Eraserheads now? If so, then another final set could be in the works or even perhaps a ‘final’ album.

The thing is, the Eraserheads are too much of a good thing to be put to rest. Nobody buys the idea that after those two multi-million selling reunion sets, Ely, Raimund, Marcus and Buddy will go back to their ‘post’ Eraserheads work with Pupil, Sandwich-Pedicab-Cambio, Markus Highway, and the Dawn, respectively.
That would be hard to fathom. It would be like returning to celibacy after a wild hot night with a supermodel. Or perhaps going back to vegetarianism after consuming the best prime cut of heavily marbled Kobe beef and crispy lechon. It is just plain shady and unreasonable.

We are not saying that their individual works with those other bands are a waste. Or not up to par at all.  Their non-Eraserheads bands are good and great, but they suffer from one fatal flaw: They are not the Eraserheads.
What band is anyway?

Ely was even reported to have signed a contract barring him from reuniting with his other ex-Eraserheads mates for at least 10 years. A stupid deal if it is ever proven to be true.
We are certain that there will be more reunion projects by the Eraserheads. Too many that they wouldn’t even feel that they have disbanded earlier this decade at all.

We would love to see them fully reunite for good. The only bad side to this proposition, however, is the sad reality that no other band will matter until the Eraserheads are physically incapable of bonding together.

If Ely, Marcus, Buudy and Raimund decide to give the band another life, which is very much likely, it will then be a case of The Eraserheads and the “other Filipino bands.” A scenario that perhaps even the deity-like quartet would find uncomfortable. But, who cares, anyway?
