Raf of The Speaks

Raf Toledo of The Speaks

NEW YORK– One of the most prominent Fil-Am bands, The Speaks,  have called it a day.

In a newsletter sent by the band's management, the Washington DC-based hard rock group announced it's final show on January 10 at the 9:30 Club in DC.

The statement did not elaborate further on the reasons why the band will split up, however, it did mention "changes in individual priorities" as a primary cause.

 The statement read in part:

"Well, as they say, “all good things must come to an end” – and that day is finally here.  It’s been a long, fun road, but the last SPX show will be at the legendary 9:30 Club in Washington DC on Saturday, January 10th.

Without getting too much into the details, we all felt that it was time to put The Speaks to rest.  Please know that there is NO drama, and NO animosity between any of us -- we were simply at a point where individual priorities were changing (for the better) and all agreed that we wanted to pursue other things… whether it’s school, family, traveling, or other musical projects.  That’s it.  Plain and simple.

It’s been a blast, and we’ve created SO MANY amazing memories together, and with every single one of you.  You – our friends and fans – are what kept us going, and we THANK YOU for all your support throughout the years.  Just know that we are ALL happy with the decision and are looking forward to the exciting new possibilities (Raf & Cal are already working on a new project, so be on the lookout for that coming soon."

The Speaks once had a hit in the Philippines with their single, High. It was covered by several established Filipino artists and is still being played in major stations there. They were also part of the first volume of Rock in the Box Fil-Am compilation album in 2006.
