 Pin-up girls

NEW YORK– In yet another proof of the rapidly changing music industry, top Filipino indie band The Pin-Up Girls are treading the road most major record companies want closed: The band is having their albums available for free download.
Note that the band is not releasing a free single or a free downloadable EP or album, they are making their ‘almost’ complete discography available without charge. The band’s discography consists of three albums: Hello Pain (2001), Taste Test Take On The Weakened Sky (2003), and All Seats are Taken (2006). The later contains a rare collaboration with the late Pinoy Rap legend Francis Magalona entitled “Water the Moon.”

“Kiko and I coordinated through text,” said Mon Castro, the front man and chief songwriter of The Pin-Up Girls.
“He dropped by the studio and hung out. He asked Angee(Our Engineer) to roll the song ( I think Angee rolled it about 3 times). Kiko, Ryan, Jeng and I were chatting. All the while Kiko was tapping away on his Blueberry. Unbeknownst to us, he was already writing his lyrics while listening to the song and chatting with us! Pure genius! Then, he stood up and said: ‘Let us take this!’. He did so, complete with three vocal tracks, in fifteen minutes!”

The band’s decision to give away their songs for free is perhaps another blow to major record labels that continue to lose their grip on a fast-slipping industry.  Some years back, Radiohead gave their fans the freedom to pay or not to pay for their album ‘In Rainbows.’ Nine Inch Nails also made their latest album available for free download.
It is regarded by many that making albums available for free is tantamount to ‘putting up a finger’ up the record labels’ behinds.

Whether this is true with the Pin-Up Girls, or this just the band’s way of handing over early Yuletide presents without any politics involved is still up for grabs. However, the important thing is that fans can enjoy the music of this truly awesome group gratis.
