PISCATAWAY– On November 7, 2009, the Rutgers Association of Philippine Students (RAPS) will present SUKOB, a talent showcase to benefit those in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana). The Filipino League at Seton Hall (FLASH) and artist collective Sensitive Guys with Guitars (SGWG) are providing additional assistance and talent for the night.
The showcase starts at 7:00PM and is being held at the Aresty Research Center on Rutgers University’s Busch Campus, located on 618 Allison Road, in Piscataway, NJ. The show is open to the public and is $10 or $5 with a donation of medical supplies.
Ondoy brought the worst rainfalls to hit the Metro Manila area in recorded history. Totaling 455mm, the rainfall of Ondoy overshadows even that of Hurricane Katrina, which equaled 250mm. As a result, over 450 people have died, and thousands have been injured.

Ciudad at Kenny's Castaways (Photo by Sheryl Garcia-Reyes) NEW YORK- Both were rainy nights. But for Manila-based rock group, Ciudad, the night sky showers during their first two gigs in New York City are like confetti heralding their triumphant arrival and celebrating a dream fulfilled. Yes, there were no riots at the airport or picket lines in front of hotel rooms with thousands of screaming teens dying to get even a piece of their hair. Ciudad's visit was simple and meek–uneventful, but it was every bit as inspiring as a a Beatle-arrival in 1964, at least for Filipino musicians back in the home country that aspires to go beyond what is possible and necessary.
Here is a band, generally deemed "too upper crust" in the Philippine music scene, playing their music in the most exciting city in the world–in their own terms: No entourage in tow, no egos in their baggages, and no exorbitant price tags for their talents. Just their honest goodness desire to play beautiful music and realize their dream of playing in this city of the world. Their resolve to bring their music elsewhere, where it might be truly appreciated is awe-inspiring. The band paid for their own travel expenses, contacted their local New York friends for places to crash-in, and opened themselves to a warm Fil-Am music community that is more than willing to help them in anyway possible. To a community used to sky-high ticket prices to see Filipino artists, Ciudad's New York tour is not only a refreshing idea, but a sign of things to come.
