NEW YORK– Since the pioneering Concert for Bangladesh organized by the late Beatle George Harrison at Madison Square Garden in 1971, Rock N’ Roll has always been a great tool for causes. From Live Aid to The Concert for New York City in the wake of the September 11 attacks, rock artists have elevated awareness and raised funds for a million different things and seemed to have made our world a better place.
On Saturday, May 30, Filipino-American rock bands will do the same as they play a show to benefit a young Filipino kid named Franz Pantaleon, who is suffering from Extra-Skeletal Ewing’s Sarcoma– a rare form of cancer.
“It is our small way of helping Franz in this difficult time for him and his family,” said Ted Reyes, editor of Poptimes Magazine and the show’s organizer. “We may not have the money to give Franz what he needs, but we hope what we have, which is our music, could raise enough funds for him.”
Franz’s and his family live in the Philippines, but he has several relatives here in New York who also helped in putting the event together. These uncles and aunts will directly receive the proceeds from the concert and merchandize sales.
While the concert “Fil-Am Bands Join Hands For Franz” may not be in the same global scale as Live Aid, it shares its basic noble purpose in helping those who are in need. In this light, the Fil-Am rock community is asking everyone to support the cause.
The show will be at Fontana’s NYC, located at 105 Eldridge Street, NYC Show starts at 6 PM and ends at 11:00 PM Open bar from 6:00- 7:00 PM Cover charge $10.00 - all proceeds will go to the Franz Pantaleon fund. The event is only for 21 years and older.
