RTB2

THE historic launch of Rock in the Box 2, the latest Filipino compilation album from Soulworks Records, dropped hard and it dropped fast. Here is an album that brings a fresh and much needed sound to the Filipino music scene…something that music fans are starving for. The 16-track album does more than bring together Filipino musicians from all over the United States and Toronto, Canada, it presents a solid wall of rock music into a world where much of mainstream music has lost all heart and true soul.

Chelsea E

GREENLIGHT Girl is a pop record by a California-based Filipina-American artist named Chelsea E.
Chelsea herself wrote nine of the 16 songs in this album. The others songs were penned by Chelsea’s collaborators and producers.
The album sounds like a trip to the 1990’s–A throwback record.

It evokes sounds of an earlier era governed by names like TLC, Janet Jackson, C.C. Penniston and Paula Abdul.
The songs have all the parts of a template 90’s pop songs: Drum machine, orchestral synth hits, and synthetic sounding distorted guitars (think Janet’s Rhythm Nation)

There are 16 tracks in the album, but one of my favorites is Dozen Roses .

THERE aren’t many nights in our music scene that we could talk about all day and all night. However, it is with utmost certainty that the recent shows here in New York with legendary Filipino guitarist Perf De Castro, The Happy Analogues and The Kuwagos are among of them.

The show last Saturday night at the Xin Fusion Lounge on Staten Island was very special.
It was so special; Perf played an extended solo 10-string classical guitar set that mesmerized everyone.
It was so special, two TV crews had to there to bear witness: ABS-CBN’s TV Crew, who covered the special night for The Filipino Channel, and our very own Poptimes TV crew, who are making the pilot episode, which will be pitched to a major network this year.
It was so special, nine FilAm artists joined Perf on stage: Bem of Qwadra and Adrian of Diablo Royale on vocals. Jerwin of Bleud, Ronnie of The Happy Analogues, and The Kuwagos’ front man Gatchie on bass, Jonze of The Analogues and Marc of The Kuwagos on drums, while Cho of the Kuwagos and I joined Perf himself doing the guitar chores.
Oh, we can change the number of artists to 10 because Anang of Ugnayan was onstage as well.

JERSEY CITY– Benefit shows are win-win situations. People get to see and hear awesome artists while helping great causes.
In the last three weeks, Jersey FilAm music fans were treated to awesome nights of pure FilAm music via two rocking benefit shows: “T.G.I.F – The Gawad Kalinga Benefit Concert “ held in Linden, NJ last April 4, 2008, and “Rock a Bye Baby” fundraiser for The March of Dimes held last April 12 in Secaucus, NJ.

(Parokya ni Edgar and Kamikazee concert in Jersey City - September 29, 2007)

“Are there Gargoyles up there?,” asked a teener inside the antediluvian theater in Jersey City – the Loews theater, the venue for the night’s Pinoy rock twin-bill of Parokya ni Edgar and Kamikazee.

She wasn’t joking at all.

Though the old theater really has that gothic vibe (it does look like a house of gargoyles and Quasimodo), it is actually Art Deco.

Designed by well-known theater architects, Rapp and Rapp in 1929, and owned by theater magnate Marcus Loew, the theater is one of the five ‘Wonder Theaters’ of Loew, and the is only one built outside New York City.
