THERE aren’t many nights in our music scene that we could talk about all day and all night. However, it is with utmost certainty that the recent shows here in New York with legendary Filipino guitarist Perf De Castro, The Happy Analogues and The Kuwagos are among of them. The show last Saturday night at the Xin Fusion Lounge on Staten Island was very special. It was so special; Perf played an extended solo 10-string classical guitar set that mesmerized everyone. It was so special, two TV crews had to there to bear witness: ABS-CBN’s TV Crew, who covered the special night for The Filipino Channel, and our very own Poptimes TV crew, who are making the pilot episode, which will be pitched to a major network this year. It was so special, nine FilAm artists joined Perf on stage: Bem of Qwadra and Adrian of Diablo Royale on vocals. Jerwin of Bleud, Ronnie of The Happy Analogues, and The Kuwagos’ front man Gatchie on bass, Jonze of The Analogues and Marc of The Kuwagos on drums, while Cho of the Kuwagos and I joined Perf himself doing the guitar chores. Oh, we can change the number of artists to 10 because Anang of Ugnayan was onstage as well.
We all ripped through the famous songs of JDLC: ‘Beep Beep’ and ‘Balong Malalim,’ as well as old Rivermaya hits and the track ‘Goodbye Rye, ‘ which is on Perf’s Leyte Benefit compilation CD. No words can describe the joy and excitement that night.
A poignant moment was when we did ‘Awit ng Kabataan,’ because it reminded everyone how we all used to do it– wild. Yes, Poptimers want it wild: with shots all around, bodies flying in the air– slam dance, and everyone singing along. Nobody can party like us Poptimers.
The night before the Staten Island gig, was the show at 5 Points NYC with the same cast: Perf, the Analogues and The Kuwagos. Although the sets were short, it was still very memorable. We all went to the traditional after gig hangout – HopKee afterwards and enjoyed a late night dinner of salt and pepper squid, pork chops, fried chicken and rice.
The 5 Points gig was Perf’s first ever gig in New York City, and we are so proud and happy that we helped him achieve that milestone in his stellar career. These were great nights for the scene and for Poptimes as well.Once again, we have showed our fellow FilAm artist from out of State how warm and welcoming we are. We did show Perf that we are one big family. The year is young and there are so many things in store for all of us. But somehow, we all needed that one spectacular weekend to kick things off and remind us that we are in a very special time in our lives- A time when all things are possible if we remain a supportive community.
