MARCUS Adoro is one of the most enigmatic artists in Philippine music history. It was said that when the Eraserheads decided to call it a day, he lingered on for a bit then drove up to La Union and became a surfer.
As the three other Eraserheads moved forward with new bands: Ely with The Mongols and Pupil, Raimund with Sandwich, Pedicab and Cambio, and Buddy with The Dawn, Cambio and Twisted Halo, Marcus remained in the solace of the beaches of La Union and just caught waves.
For years, he shunned the spotlight and refused to issue statements about the demise of the Eraserheads and his future as a musician. Occasionally, he would be spotted in small rock clubs unannounced, and just jammed with anybody from his musical past.
Now, Marcus is back with a solo album. Perhaps, there's just no killing the music that is in him. His fire for his music, as we now know, could not be extinguished by the towering waves he caught up North.
In an exclusive interview with Poptimes Magazine, Marcus opens his mind and invites you to take a trip along 'MarkusHighway.'
Ted Reyes: Tell us about your new band
Marcus Adoro: The new band is called MarkusHighway. Kami "Ang Banda Ng Barrio".
Ted Reyes: What about your new album? Who produced it? Did you write all the songs? Did any of your ex-bandmates contribute?
Marcus Adoro: My new album is called "Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah". Me and Mark Villena produced it under Warner Music Philippines. Yup I did write all of the songs for this album and nope there were no collaborations with my former Eheads mates.
Ted Reyes: Are you planning to promote your album with tours? Any plans to tour NY?
Marcus Adoro : Yup a tour is part of the promotion. I hope you guys can help us with the New York part haha yeah we're preparing a multimedia show for New York.
Ted: By all means. We would love to have you here. Now, Tell us about surfing. What attracted you to surfing? Where's the biggest wave you caught?
Marcus: The biggest I caught so far is definitely in my homebreak La Union. I think I got attracted with the romance of the lone surfer and the nature. I also was mystified with the lifestyle and the history so I lived it. Surfing? It's not for everyone I guess.
Ted: Why did you decide to retire to the beach and surf, as well as teach surfing?
Marcus: I 've always wanted to be a surfer even in Eheads days I just did not have time for it then and so when Ely left I followed suit and headed there straight away. Nope I did not become a "surf instructor".
Ted: Where's your dream beach?
Marcus: It's a secret.
Ted: How did the Erasrheads break up? In your perspective, what do you think caused the split?
Marcus: For me Eheads died a natural death. It was just waiting to happen. You know all good things must end.
Ted: According to the official Eheads release, Ely texted you guys and told you that it wass over. How did you take that?
Marcus: Ely texted that "It's graduation time" he was a year ahead of us at the University and so after a year or so, I graduated myself.
Ted: Do you miss being an Eraserhead? What do you miss the most?
Marcus: Nope I dont miss it.
Ted: Do you still cover EHeads songs?
Marcus: Yeah, if we play New York we will play "Ang Huling El Bimbo" for you guys ha ha ha!
Ted: That would be nice! hahaha! Are you still in contact with Buddy, Ely and Raims? You still hang out, or jam perhaps?
Marcus: We communicate almost telepathetically as I dont have a phone. Ely is keeping himself "guarded" most of the time but there's no problem with Buds and Raims.
Ted: In his Poptimes Magazine interview, Raims said that an Eheads reunion will never happen. Do you think so? Why? If not, why not?
Marcus: Never is a big word. I think that's just his way of avoiding to expound on the question...maybe...I don't know what's gonna happen either.
Ted: How would you like to be remembered? As an ex-membr of one of the most influential bands in Pinoy rock history? Or just a cool surfer who wrote and played in a cool band?
Marcus: I want to be remembered as both an Eraserhead AND a cool surfer with a cool band and more. Because people haven't really seen some of my other stuff.
Ted: How would you like the Eraserheads to be remembered?
Marcus:I have my memories thank you but I think it's not my problem how we are going to be remembered by you. I mean it's not my problem.
Ted: I see. How do you see the future of Pinoy rock?
Marcus: You are staring at it. I mean all the bands now from my generation and all the other new bands who are now busy in the "scene" are the future of Pinoy rock.
Ted: What's your take on music piracy? Do you believe that it does more good than harm or it is just evil.
Marcus: My take is still the same as my views on it in 2002, at least make the album sleeve/art a "collectible", that way you upgrade people's taste I might be wrong but that was my thesis for my unreleased Kamonkamon. It's evil and it's available everywhere, it's good because the common tao gets access to infornmation for a lesser price.
Ted: What do you think of the current political situation?
Marcus:Yeah, I've been updating myself with the current events and I'm just sitting on the fence for now, so to speak. I'm just watching things to unfold on their own and not really thinking of committing myself to any particular side. Obvious na naman eh. Parang ansarap abangan.
Ted: Do you have a message for Fil-Am music fans and Poptimes Magazine readers?
Marcus: Pls experience "Behold, Rejoice Surfernando Is Hear Nah" from MarkusHighway, dahil kayo ang inspirasyon ko dito. Mabuhay Noypi!
