BENNINGTON–Both Black 47 and the Young Dubliners have been fixtures of the modern Celtic rock scene for over two decades and continue to be among the genre's biggest names. Larry Kirwan, front man of the New York City-based Black 47 and Keith Roberts, front man of the Los Angeles-based Young Dubliners, first met back in the late 1980s during their early touring days. A great friendship has endured ever since. Says Mr. Roberts, "We've always been close. We've both been on the road since the late '80s and here we are now headlining together." Both are native sons of Ireland with Mr. Kirwan hailing from Wexford and Mr. Roberts hailing from, not surprisingly, Dublin.
Their connection turned out to be even deeper than they thought as they recently discovered during a conversation. Mr. Kirwan was recounting the story of a friend back in Dublin who helped him put on one of his plays. It was then they realized this friend was Mr. Roberts' very own father. "It was only years later that we joined the dots. My dad had passed away at that point," Mr. Roberts said. In addition to being a songwriter,Mr. Kirwan is also a prolific author and playwright.
The sound of the traditional Irish pennywhistle, fiddle and uilleann pipes set to hard-driving rock guitar and energetic drums creates a strong impact. Both Black 47 and the Young Dubliners are masters and pioneers of this craft which no doubt has garnered them the devoted following they both possess. Living on opposite sides of the country, it is not often they have the opportunity to play the same show. They will get this rare chance on the evening of Saturday, September 4th at the Bennington Irish Music Festival.
The first Bennington Irish Music Festival launches with an impressive lineup. In addition to Black 47 and the Young Dubliners, they will also feature singer Shana Morrison, daughter of the legendary Van Morrison; Maura O'Connell, vocalist and native of County Clare; McPeake, group direct from Belfast; Seamus Connolly, Irish fiddle virtuoso and many other Celtic-influenced musicians. The Festival will also feature performances from several Irish Dance Troupes from greater New England as well as pipe bands.
Naturally, the Guinness will be plentiful as will imported Irish and domestic beers and wines. Specialty vendors will offer food and beverages, Irish and Celtic crafts, jewelry, art and garments.
It is not just a playground for Celtic culture-loving adults, however. The festival is also an ideal destination for families. The Celtic Kids Zone will provide a multitude of activities featuring storytelling, games, face painting and Irish magic.
Workshops on Irish musical instruments and Irish step dance will also be offered and will be made available to all attendees at no cost.
